Turkey's domestically developed electric high-speed train, known as the Milli Elektrikli Hızlı Tren, reached a speed of 250 km/h during testing, breaking its previous speed record. The train, produced by TÜRASAŞ, underwent dynamic safety testing on the Gebze-Eskişehir and Eskişehir-Polatlı railway lines, where it surpassed its earlier 240 km/h milestone.
Why it matters
- The train features a fully domestically produced critical systems package, including the Train Control and Management System and the Signaling System, developed in collaboration with ASELSAN.
- It offers a passenger capacity of 577, with aluminum body construction, eight cars, and accessibility features such as elevators and designated spaces for disabled passengers.
- Onboard systems include automatic train protection, electromechanical doors, full automatic climate control, fire detection, passenger information, and surveillance cameras.
This achievement represents a significant step in Turkey's strategy to reduce dependence on foreign technology in rail systems.
